[Peugeot-L] 86 505TD Starting Problem - help please

Sure there is a way to test the starter and solenoid. All starters are pretty much the same. 12volts is supplied through a low amperage connector through the ignition switch. This low amp power turns on a relay in the case of a starter its called a solenoid, but its still a relay ; coils of wire wound around a shaft creating an electro magnet. The low amperage or small wire on a starter energizes the relay which pushes the heavy duty battery cable into contact with the starter motor, this starts the motor spinning. also a solenoid pushes the the gear forward which engages the flywheel to turn the engine over. The clicking you hear may be in the solenoid. It may be engaging the flywheel but not making electrical contact with the motor. To test a starter on the car: Find the small wire on the starter (it goes from the starter to the starter relay) supply 12 volts via a heavy jumper wire to the terminal on the starter. Conversely, 12 volts is already at every starter. The positive cable from the battery goes straight to the starter. Many shade tree mechanics shunt (short) a screw driver from the battery terminal to either the other big terminal on the starter which is the second side of the solenoid contacts, this may turn the starter but not kick out the drive gear, best to touch the little wire from the starter relay to the battery positive.
You still need good power from the battery or these tests won't tell you anything. Clean all the heavy duty terminals battery acid oxidizes the terminals. They get dirty fast. If you are sure you have good juice at the starter and bypassiing the ignition switch as I mention and the engine still does not turn over pull the starter and try these test on the work bench with battery jumper cables.
Hope this helps.
