Hmmm... This is sounding like protectionism at it's best. I'm sure the manufacturers don't like putting Corollas into Dutch hands at US prices - leaving a lot of money in our Dutchman's pocket. Realistically, the emissions stuff on a US spec Toyota are functioning at near 100% at 5K miles, so the barriers sound manufactured. I bet if someone Lexus/Nexus'ed "import" & "DOT" they'd find congresscritters from Michigan standing in the way of any proposed curtailments in the de-facto trade barrier.

Funny, it was probably viewed as keeping the hi performance exotics at bay at first, but now, it looks like entry and mid-level cars are what would be coming from automakers like PSA, FIAT, Renault, etc.

Maybe we can sue the US Government for violation of the NAFTA accords? :D I want my Citroen!!

Deal is, the issue is with Peugeot. They could come back if they wanted. They've got plenty of money. I'm convinced they simply don't want to. Hope FIAT beats them and brings the 500 along with Alfa. I'd jump.

A good question. The answer is yes. Several years ago a friend who was living in here in SoCal decided to go back home to Holland. He bought a new Toyota Corolla because it was much cheaper here than in Holland planning to put the requisite 4 or 5 thousand miles on it and ship it over. I told him not to do it because he would have problems getting it into Holland. Most countries want people to spend their money in country and have really arcane rules re: displacement, emissions equipment, RH or LH drive, etc. Just enough different to make it impossible to comply unless you spend alot of money modifying the vehicle. My friend didn't listen, he shipped the car along with everything else to Rotterdam. It was a disaster. He had to replace many, many items which were DOT approved but not by their equivilent of DOT. And, because the engine was 100cc larger than the same model of Toyota sold in Holland he had to pay for special emissions testing and replacement of almost the all "smog" equipment. The process took almost 3 years and many thousands of euros before he got his car back. Perhaps in Holland not many people bring in non compliant vehicles and maybe there are not many companies, like in the USA, that do that type of work, I don't know why it took so long but it did. He still drives that Toyota but wishes he had listened to my advice.
