Just for the record...the care finally started up after about 2 months of
sitting! This whole situation could have been solved in much less time if
only I had heeded the advice of several listers and checked the easy things
first. It turns out, it was NOT my solenoid that was suspect but rather my
judgement. I should have checked all the cables first as it seems the
problem was really one of a corroded 4 gauge power cable, the one that
connnects froom + terminal to the starter solenoid. Unfortunately for me,
but hopefully not for those who come after me with starter problems, I
decided to remove the starter from my other peugeot, then had to remove what
I thought was the bad starter from the 86, and then of course put it all
back together. This took hours and plenty of cursing, all of which might
have been avoided if I had just checked the cables dirst and bought a new
cable in the first place (which I eventually did). Live and learn I guess.
One good thing that came out of it, I did install a relay for the starter as
many of you probably already have had to do.
thanks again for everyone's help.
vive le peugeot list!
