[Peugeot-L] importing again...

OnOnhi everyone...

this comes up here from time to time, and i've done it myself before, but this time i have picked a more difficult car! i have been digging more deeply since this car is not as easy to get in, and now i have learned a few interesting things! (My chosen car now is a diesel 92 VW Jetta 5 speed.)

The BMW Club has done a lot of this, and people there encourage you to import on your own (an informal entry, as i did several years ago with a volvo from canada). Certain variables can put a few more hoops in front of you, pushing you toward using a Registered Importer ($) or for worse cases, an International Commercial Importer ($$). (Using either importer makes the process not just expensive, but lengthy and involoved. The opposite informal entry is simple, quick and very easy!) However, some creative people have found a few ways around some of these obstacles (and therefore, avoid the need for using an importer).

One way some people have done it is to bring the vehicle in as a FARM VEHICLE. (Think of one of AndrE CitroEn's original goals for the 2CV: To be able to transport a farmer's eggs to market, across rough French countryside WITHOUT BREAKING UP THE EGGS! lol) This reminds me of a farm owner I sold a Volvo wagon to a few years ago. He paid almost nothing for insurance and registration, since he plated and titled the new 240 wagon as a farm vehicle.

http://www.bmwworld.com/bmw/importing.htm Goes into more detail about other ways to get them in without going through difficult modifications for compliance.

As for me, I am still working on this VW (no passive seat belts, no airbag!)...
