With an air chisel about 20-30 minutes each side
it will be easier with the wheel off but that is all except maybe the sway bar link
to make it easier to pull the control arm down
I've never used the tool
The ball joint just unscrews from the strut no big deal
A pipe wrench will also work
A ball joint popper is necessary to separate the ball joint tapered shaft from the control arm
and you might as well get a real one
The Chinese make some great ones for $10 - $20
a google for tie rod separators will return a tousand but they all seem to be the fork kind
www.princessauto.com is where I got the one I like I wrote them as their catalogue is unsearchable
but you can download the whole catalogue
although a pickle fork will do it it will screw up the rubber boot
which is no good for the 50% of the time you do pop the joint to pull the axle
and want to reuse the ball joint
Please clean the threads below the nut on the ball joint with a wire brush
and give them a squirt of penetrating oil before undoing
If the nut jambs and the tapper turns in the trailing arm it is grief.
