Hi Phil,
Good question. On the main forum, there are several topics or categories.
Under each of those topics there are multiple threads. Those threads are
sorted by date, so the newest would be at the top. Now on the main page,
there are icons next to each topic. If the icon changes color, it means
there has been activity since you've last clicked on it (I believe you
need to be logged in with your user account for this feature to work).
This is what an icon will look like with new activity (dark blue):
