You might have better luck with these suckers and they do suck with capitals
if you get new inner grippers.

Take one of the floating slider units off and have a close look.
There is a sort of clamp in plastic behind the slider, which - when
the little plastic tab fits into the tiny rectangular hole you can
see from the front of the slider - locks the clamp into place on the
metal rod that actuates the lock.
If they are removed with brute force, these clamps may be destroyed.
The correct way to remove them is to pull the slider up as hard as
possible until you can see the rectangular hole, push a small blade
screwdriver in the hole to release the clamp.
Replacing them involved pre-loading the clamp to "almost engaged
level" so that a bit of a push will make it clamp down.
alternatively, you can pull the tab into its little rectangular hole
with the same small screwdriver that you used to release the slider
in the first place.
Practise makes perfect.
