This is quite useless, because the sent from is forged and spammers use open relays or hacked servers (particularly exchange with an OWA access, it's fairly straightforward), not their own machines. Looking at my logs on my mail server, I see that in the last 24 hours, 1299 messages were rejected because they had blacklisted IPs with known forged emails. American companies with pacific rim IPs, for example... And how many emails have you gotten stating your message was rejected because it contained a virus when in fact you had sent none?

So, not only the spammers would not get crushed, but the victims would be doubly victimized. And the internet traffic would go way up.

If more people would use real time spam, open relay and weak security blacklists (the mail server verifies if the machine connecting is legit and not blacklisted), that open relays were closed, that people used firewalls with statefull inspection and tripwires (block the IP that violates so many policies of the firewall for x hours or days), etc etc. I do all that (plus some of my own filters) and altough I process over 15,000 emails a day on my server (not this email) I have not seen spam in the past several months. And you can do that for any type of account, including mailing lists...
