Hi Mike,
Use engine oil (20W40) in the gearbox.
I forgot to mention that there is a Rube-Goldberg medium-term solution
to the crown gear if it's worn: take the rear axle and diff apart and
simply reverse the gear in the housing. That way, the worn part of the
wheel will only contact the worm under the over-run, so any "surging"
will be banished. Make sure the shims and bearing races are reversed
too, to ensure the gears are properly centred.
