Well,
Everything went in as planned. Rebuilt Steering Pump for my V-6 ( variable assist ), new plumbing ( high & low pressure ) pipes and hoses. no leaks, everything is tight and working for about 2 -3 hours of driving. Of note, I just got my Classic Car Tags the day before. I missed Carlisle Event this summer for this reason, no tags and steering problem.
Then the right side ( rack bellows) started oozing brake fluid after sitting for about 30 minutes and engine turned off. I am wondering if the seals are just dried out, since the 505 has been sitting for over 6 months, and need to be worked again or is it a true failure. I am also not certain if I switched the feed and return pipes that go from the Ram to the Pinion Valve, thus causing pressure on the wrong side of the rack.
Any thoughts on that? My repair manuals do not clearing state which pipe threads into which side.
Any experience with his or with rebuilding the steering rack and just what is involved including time and parts that need to be replaced? Does the rack need to come down for rebuilding or is there a spare rack someone wants to part with for my 505 V-6 Variable speed version? I really want to get this done during the summer months and enjoy driving it.
Any thoughts? I know there is a lot of knowledge out there on this issue.
Also any repair facilities in the Philadelphia area that you would recommend if I got this route?
Peter
