Yes, that can cause you problems. I had a customer once
who was doing something on his diesel with it running with the air cleaner off, put down his glove, and it disappeared-it was sucked into his intake. Diesels have
high compression ratios and high suction at the intake.
I don't remember exactly about the intake(on the XN6 they were built into the head), but take the air filter
off and open the throttle. You may be able to get it out that way; and if it's not there, it make have been sucked into the cylinders and bent your valves. Hope not. It's been along time since I worked on them, and I
did alot of M-B diesels since then; so I'm thinking the
turbo may not have had a throttle. Don't think it'll be
in your turbo as it's blowing, not sucking; and it's a more convoluted route to the intake. I hope someone with more recent experience verifies this or has some better advice. If you can get the stuff out, notice when you crank it if the engine seems to have a smooth cranking sound or if it sounds uneven as if it's losing
a cylinder or more; or if it's turning over faster as if it has lost compression. If you bent valves, only the
head needs to come off. I doubt if it did any more damage than that. Anyway, I hope the intake is just clogged. Good luck!
