I bought an engine from a fellow to use in a non-automotive
application. I was told that the engine is a 1981 504 diesel. The
head is marked XD-2. The only casting markings I see on the block are
7 6 81 4 and 794010398.
The engine was on a workstand when I bought it, and the crank was out
of the engine. The previous owner had a replacement crank, and the
replacement had a tag that indicates it is for an XD 2. The owner had
let the replacement crank get rusty in his garage, so I took it to a
machine shop and had it turned. Once I got it back I ordered
oversized bearing shells for an 81 504D.
Last week I started to install the crank, and I find that the bearing
shells that came out of the block are considerably larger than the
new bearing shells. At first I thought the bearing supplier had given
me the wrong shells, but when I checked I found that they fit the
crank correctly. The new bearing shells will fit neatly inside the
old bearing shells, though.
The crank itself seems to be the correct length, but the crank throws
are too great for the block. They'll hit the sides of the block.
So.. does anyone have any idea what kind of situation I have here? Do
I have a block that's older than I thought? Was more than one XD-2
engine offered. Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Darrell Franks
