Listen to everything with a mechanics stethescope or a 3' piece of hose: alternator, AC, PS pump, waterpump, fan bearing, and idlers The old style vacuum pump, with the 2 screws on top, requires oil in its crankcase through a rear plug

Hi I'm new to the group. I just inherited a 1985 505 2.3L Turbo 125k   (miles) diesel wagon that runs well except for a screaching noise,   like a loos fan belt, when it starts up. The noise goes away after a   minute or so and less if its been running. I thought it was a loos   belt and since I have tightened all the belts its still there. I   thought it was the vacuum pum but the brakes work fine, a little hard   at the beginning of the day and fine after that (probably a small   vacuum leak). The noise seems to be coming from the   fan/injectorpump/alternator area.

Any Ideas? Anybody have this problem before?

  Thanks
  Yong
