[Peugeot-L] 1976 504 gas automatic - problems

Hi,

just bought the car. Couple of questions-

  1. Car exhibits severe lack of power under load. Starts one turn of the key, Idles OK, passes CA smog with good #'s. Has terrible acceleration. Won't go over 70, and it falls back on hills, and gets awful mileage. Trans shifts OK

I noticed that pulling out the choke 1/2 way on hills would give it more power, so I am thinking this is a carb issue. Previous owner states carbs were rebuilt and the car never ran right afterwards.

2. Shimmy at highway speeds in steering wheel. Is this probably just whl balance or maybe ball joints? How do you balance the wheels with the little hole ? Is it possible to do front end work without the 7 special tools that the haynes book mentions?

3. Would it help to dump the thermal reactor, and if so would manifolds from a 1979 gas 504 fit? I have access to these. what about this "coppolair' system?

thanks in advance, I have had a couple of 504's but never a 1976, and I know the reputation for problems because of the smog control.

thanks in advance,

Josef
