(an old car, but new to me)
...So I observed that when driving over bumps there is sometimes a
thud sound which seems localized between the front two passanger
seats or perhaps just at the rear of the seats. This is accompnied
by what "feels" like an upwards thud at the same location.
My immediate inclination was that this was an engine or transmission
mount issue, or perhaps a loose muffler/exhaust.
Upon inspection under the car I found that all the mounts I could
find appeared visually to be solid (and nothing moved unusually with
me pushing on them), but I observed that one of the two transmission
vibration dampers (the hammer shaped one) was cracked at the bracket
and was hanging from one bolt, resting against the exhaust pipe.
I wondered if the thud or sound I had felt was the sound of the the
damper banging against the exhaust pipe (though the thud felt
heavier), so I removed it and drove around.
The thudding I observed earlier remained unchanged. The car shifts
flawlessly and without any unusual noises.
So my question is, do I have a problem that I just haven't seen yet
(and if so what specifically should I look at)?, or is this just the
nature of this vehicle?
Thanks.
