Just a friendly reminder here. This is the second time this has happened to me. The
last time was about three years ago, and it just happened again tonight. This was a
different lock, and I hadn't graphited it. I went to put the key in the ignition, and it
would only go in about 3/4 of the way and then- dead stop.
Luckily, I was at the house this time. Long time list members know what I am talking
about. What happens is the little catch that corresponds to the little notch in the key
will sometimes stick. The function of this bugger is to remind you that the key is still
in the ignition, and is what makes the chime when the door is opened while the key is
in the ignition.
It essentially sticks open when it fails, blocking the key from being inserted. I
remembered what I had read after I had essentially destroyed a lock one night while I
was out on a date one night. The idea is to stick a small wire in and release the catch,
or, in other words, to move the lever back.
I put some graphite lock-ease in. I tried a paper clip with a fashioned small hook on
the end, but I could not get it to work. It seemed way too big. Maybe I wasn't patient
enough. I then got some really fine gauge solder, made a small hook at the end, and
started fishing. The whole time the chime was on, so I knew if I could get the chiming
to stop, that I got the little lever back to where it should be.
It took a little doing, but I got it.
Just a reminder, get some graphite lock-ease and do the locks. It probably wouldn't
be a bad idea to put a really small gauge wire somewhere in the car, just in case, as
well.
