Re: [Peugeot-L] 604 TD electrics dead

Hi Gary,

the battery terminals were greased and checked regularly and today were looking very good and not corroded.

I did not really jump start the car, because of its dead electrics. I just connected the battery of the other car to the Peugeots battery by means of the jump starter cables. When that was to no avail, I directly connected the other battery to the Peugeots battery cables. I am very sure that the contacts were sufficient to at least get a little sign of life in the Peugeots electrics - if really the battery terminals were the problem...

but there still was not even the smallest sign of working electrics. No switches, no interieur lights, no nothing. So I could not even try to jump start. The whole car is dead like if someone has simply switched of the master switch.

A friend of mine suggested I should have a look at the earth contacts of the Peugeot wiring loom? He is car mechanic but has no special knowledge of old Peugeots, however he said there would be one at the engine, at the transmission and probably one or two at other places of the wiring loom. Trouble is I don't really know where the earth contacts to engine and transmission are. The garage is a public underground garage with no facilities to work on the car so I'd have to search for the contacts somewhere in the dark under the car, with a torch...

Would the failure of one single earth contact be sufficient to stop the whole electricity? Or, the other way round, is it likely that all earth contacts are bad, and just that the last one that was working failed?

As I said, the car is COMPLETELY dead, not a single electric item is working even dimly. It's just plain dead.

regards,
Thomas
