Industry: Alfa Romeo confirms return to USA

Alfa Romeo
Alfa Romeo has confirmed its return to the US market after an
absence of over 10 years. Sales will resume in late 2009; Alfa will
sell the next-generation version of the 159 saloon and station
wagon, the Brera coupe and the latest Spider roadster. The range
could include diesel versions of the 159 as well as Q4 four-wheel
drive models, and hotted-up GTA versions of the three cars. There
are no plans to export the smaller 147's successor, the 149, to the
US as yet.
Final fine-tuning for the US-market cars is now underway, according
to AutoWeek, though the 159, Brera and Spider were designed with US
safety and emissions legislation in mind from the outset. These
models will be sold via the existing Maserati network, with dealer
numbers expected to grow during the next decade. An Alfa Romeo
spokesman told AutoWeek: "We're under no illusion. The North
American market is the toughest car market in the world. But it is
also the largest in terms of volume. Alfa Romeo can no longer afford
not to be represented there. We're convinced there is potential for
Alfa Romeo and we are determined to succeed."
