  That's not necessarily so. The only "exposed" connection in an alternator is where the brushes contact the armature. And, in an alternator, unless the alternator is at full output, the current there isn't that much, since the brushes only conduct the current to energize the field to establish the magnetic field. All other connections are *relatively* weather-proof. Just remember, that in some applications (not necessarily Pug applications, though) that the alternator is mounted very low on the engine and is somewhat exposed to water splashed up from the road.

  Now, if the alternator were drenched with salty water, as if driving through flooded streets on the coast (I used to live in Charleston, SC and I saw lots of this), or from road salting, or whatever, then its possible that the water/spray could have shorted out the diodes or something. But, in general, getting sprayed occasionally with a blast of water shouldn't really damage an alternator.
