Just wanted to update everyone in case they should have this problem
in the future. I pinpointed to the problem to a clogged pickup tube
screen. I tried several different solvents and back flushed it but it
really only solved the problem temporarily. I then decided to just
suck it up and remove the tank. I also removed the fuel level sender
so I could look into the tank. I took pics, which I may post, if
anyone thinks they would be useful. My fuel level sender was rusting
apart, which probably explains why it only works when it feels like
it. The screen was completely clogged by ????. I'm not sure what. I
think that the oil and diesel fuel were having a reaction in the tank
with the galvanized surface which is then blocking the screen. That's
my best guess anyhow. I put some solvent in the tank, swirled it
around, dumped it all out. Repeat. Put it all back together and
everything seemed great...that is, for about a week. Then I started
having the same type of issues, which is where I was at last night.
Somone had suggested to me to switch the fuel out and return lines
which I did (on side of the road, mind you!) Problem solved. The
return line has no screen so it should't ever clog. The only problem
is that whatever is clogging the tank screen will eventually make it
to the fuel filters, which I feel is much better and easier to deal
with than the tank screen.
This whole experiece begs the question, why have a tank screen at all?
It's a PITA to service and you have fuel filters already.
