First, congratulations on new purchase. 405S is a fine touring
sedan. I don't want to disapoint you in anyway but I am obligated to
make you be prepared so you don't find any suprises.
405 automatic transmission, ZF4HP14 is one notoriously bad
transmission. Other 405 owners may think otherwise and claim they
got more than 200K miles out of it and still going strong. But I
believe those are lucky ones and you won't be hearing from other
average owners who got burned by the premature tranny failure and
stayed away from Peugeot ever since. Certainly, those people will
not bother to talk about it on this forum.
How bad is it? I've seen even the factory fresh remanufactured ones
fail within 1000 miles of service (2 in a row). My first car ever,
89 405S failed it's tranny at 68K miles, second car at 130K miles
and ever since I start buying junk 405s, fixing and selling or
parting them out, I've seen bunch of 405s being sold cheap because
of the bad transmission. exception of few lucky ones, I've seen most
of them never see past 150K miles of city driving. For more highway
use, you may see more mileage out of it. Although I've rebuilt
couple of these, I wasn't able to determined the common cause of the
failure. There are ways to improve it while rebuilding it like using
rubber o-ring instead of bronze ring that's known to cause premature
wear on metal sleeve out but that's about it. One common problem
that can be fixed without taking the transmission apart is the
shuttle spring failure. When this spring fails, you get a slip
during 4-3 downshift.
Since you already made the purchase, I wish you to make the best out
of it. Do the fluid and fiter change regularly.
