Absolutely. Out here in California, where Peugeot sold quite a few
505s, finding people to work on them is pretty trivial. I am always
surprised by how many 505s I see in Oakland and Richmond.
I got to talking with my preferred Volvo wrench a while back. He
eventually went off about how great the Citroen hydraulics are.
Knowing how much Volvo guys tend to dislike the Peugeot derived V6, I
offered to buy a Citroen if he would work on it. Turns out he was a
factory trained Citroen mechanic many years ago. D'oh!
I also think that Peugeot could have / should have stayed a bit more
down market than they did with the 505. If you look at Honda, BMW,
Volvo, even Mercedes, they all sold extremely basic cars up through
the mid 80s. The impression I got of the 505 is that it was, for the
most part, aimed at being quite a luxury car in the United States.
Most of the Peugeots I see in the yards here are pretty well optioned
(diesels, V6s, Mi16s, the occasional turbo, etc). Even the XN6
powered models were pretty well loaded.
Regardless. I want a big (505 sized), RWD (no transverse mounted AWD
garbage), turbodiesel wagon with four wheel independent suspension and
a manual transmission (ideally six speed). Lots of sound deadening
would be nice, but I could care less about other luxury gizmos. Eight
passenger would be fine, as long as everything can be folded flat.
But... if it's not simple enough to work on myself, I want a good
network of dealers and independent mechanics.
I won't hold my breath.
