Hey John... man, you're far away from Seattle!
I concur w Brian. The c/head has most likely incurred some combustion
chamber to waterjacket cracks... Surely headbolts can stretch [which
is measurable], but they got torqued down properly and don't
suddenly fail years later! Also, without first overheating the engine,
I don't think the headgasket failed either. Therefore, I believe the
culprit must be the head itself... I had to toss a few for that very
reason [after the repairs didn't hold].
I'd sure like to know where one can come up with a good c/head?
About that 8hr drive? I'd locate a cylinderhead and gasket first... then
do the repair prior to hitting the road again... It's not a fun
roadside adventure in my humble opinion [I've had a few].
Good luck. Keep us posted!
