[Peugeot-L] 505 TD air filter

Hi all, the foam air filter in my '85 TD gets a lot of black oily residue on it from the breather tube that comes off the valve cover and I've been wondering if anyone has in the past put in some kind of drain to catch this stuff before it gets to the filter. I was thinking of putting a T-joint piece into the hose to divert this stuff downwards into a trap I could empty periodically. My air filters are basically very clean ie little if any dusty crap, just the black, oily muck contaminating them. Has anyone cleaned one of these filters by hand?? how did you do it?? what did you use??
