Are all 3 linkages really broken/damaged? I mean not just worn out but actually damaged like bent? Those linkages tends to wear out easily and when they are loose they tend to pop out during shifting.

The way linkages work on 405, there is no way they can get damaged by fore-aft movement of the engine no matter how excessive the movement was. Only way it can be done is excessive sideway movement caused by sideway collision.

I bet the mechanic is saying they are all worn out requiring replacement.
