I've got a white 505 wagon that I really like with some minor dent's
and dimples. I'm thinking of painting it myself. I have the compressor
and all appropriate equipment. I used to use automotive urethanes a
lot for props and so on in my former (working) life.I know how to lay
down paint from a spray gun.The issue is money. I know how much it
would cost for catalyzed urethane, about $300 for all the stuff I
would need from the auto refinishing supply.
My plan is to use cheap white gloss lacquer from the paint store in
town that sells to the furniture and interior refinishers. By the
gallon it cost so little, about $20, and it uses cheap laq thinner for
reduction. So tempting. And since I have to paint in a back driveway,
the stuff dries quickly enough that I think I can get away with it.
The car does not have a clear coat, and has been buffed thin in spots
but I can fill, prime and smooth it nicely to prep it for next to
nothing. Then spray and pray.
is this plan nuts?
