My 84 505 STI (XN6) has been making an awful grinding noise, only
sometimes, when I apply the brakes. The "only sometimes" is what
concerns me.
Two months ago I had the car in the air and carefully inspected all
pads, on all fours, inner and outer. Since then I did replace the rear
proportioning valve with a new one, but I can't imagine how that may
have affected the front brakes
At first I heard the grinding after making a left turn after a
prolonged period of driving straight (in a straight line, that is), but
more recently I hear it when coming to a stop.
I am not sure if I have a question that putting the front end in the
air won't answer, but it seems strange that I went from allowable pad
thickness to (maybe) metal on metal in two months of regular driving.
Any theories/suggestions will be gladly entertained.
Also, just out of curiosity, does anyone have a good source for new,
not rebuilt, front calipers for my 84 sedan and, if so, does anyone
have a ballpark purchase figure that they can provide me with?
