They're not in all paints, AFAIK. I bought a respirator when I
decided to try and paint the interior of my car (big mistake, but
that's another story). Those that have isocyanates will be labeled as
such. Isocyanates are odor free, so while a normal half-face mask
would work to prevent your absorpotion of them, you can't tell when
the filter is no longer doing its job.
Personally, I thought that my brain was worth $40.
I find it real useful when I'm dealing with any manner of nasty
organic funk (liquid electricasl tape, carb cleaner, etc) in a less
than extremely well ventilated area.
However, I'm plenty sure that there's lots of other stuff you can
absorb through your skin while painting.
