What I had read when I was looking for information on appropriate
measures to take with the rattle can plastic paint was that
isocyanates were primarily dangerous because they were odorless. With
the half-mask system, you only know that the nasty organic funk
filters are no longer working when you start to smell stuff. The
particulate filters clog up and it becomes difficult to breathe. This
means that you are given no indication of when the filters are no
longer doing a good job of removing the isocyanates from the
airstream.
With all of this, I had assumed that long sleeve clothing and
appropriate gloves (I like the nitrile ones) were just common sense
when working with a lot of these chemicals.
