I have an 84 505 STI (XN6) 5spd. sedan that appears to be leaking oil
from the rear of the pan gasket just to the front of the transmission.
I would like to change the larger pan gasket and, while I have it off,
the rear lateral seals.
I am hoping that I can do this procedure without having to remove the
motor. I have done several 505 complete overhauls and seem to remember
that the rear seal was comprised of two rubber strips that fit over a
tiny dowel on either side of the rear main cap and, with the use of
well oiled shim stock, was installed with the rear main bearing cap.
It looks as though I can get to the pan gasket by removing the p/s ram
and lines, supporting the motor from above then disconnecting the cross
member and lowering it. What I would like to know is whether, once I
have the full pan off, I can r&r the rear main bearing cap and lateral
rubber seals with the engine bolted to the transmission. Might anyone
out there know this, or happen to have an upside down block around that
they could have a look at?
Thanks,
Ken
