A good alternator will charge without the battery light bulb once you rev
the engine to a certain rpm, which varies among cars, but 2500-3500 should
do it. Then it will continue to charge until you shut it off. You will
have to rev it again upon restarting. (On an '86 or later 505 automatic,
don't do this in N, or in P after moving the stick out of P with the engine
running. Do it in Park right away, or hold it in first gear when you take
off.)
