Hi
New boy here... from the UK
I have just bought a Peugeot and am wondering what I have got myself
into!
I have bought a second hand Peugeot 405 4 dr 1.6 on a K plate (1991).
Its a one owner with a genuine 49K miles.
Its a long story... basically we had a Rover but the engine went south.
We decided it was not worth fixing and reluctantly sent it off to the
scrapyard.
It could not have happened at a worst time, as a family we are pretty
skint, so a cheap run about was all we could afford :-(
I am a fairly experienced (but not necessarily knowledgeable) home
mechanic. Most of my work is on Range Rovers and that is where nearly
all my knowledge lies.
Now I am led to believe that these 1.6 engines need fairly regular
cam belt changes. Somebody told me every 30K miles? Does not sound right
to me - but I am not about to take any chances!?
I also have been told that the carburettors are problematic on them and
especially the auto-choke (which ours has).
So I am looking for any tips from the wise gurus on here on how to get
as much usage out of this car as we can (my wife can trash a perfectly
good car in an amazingly short period of time!).
What exactly are the issues with the webber(?) carb and the auto
choke? What are the warning signs and what are the best options for
keeping it serviceable?
OnThanks for any advice...
John
