Dave,
I get that problem on my 86 XN6 wagon. I take a screwdriver and bridge the
terminals on the starter momentarily-the motor whirs. Then the key works
normally. Odd thing: I put in a remanufactured starter recently.

Subject: [Peugeot-L] 504 Gas starter issues
Last night I left work early to buy some parts/supplies for a long
motorcycle trip I am taking next week. I went into the store, when I came
out to start the car all I got was clicks in both Park and Neutral. After
calling my wife to pick me up (pissing her off) the car finally turned over
and I drove it to my mechanic. After I got there it started fine and will
check later today. Is my starter going bad? I had full electrical when
trying to start, a/c came on and everything worked?
Let me know your thoughts, it is at my mechanic until Monday.
