[Peugeot-L] 84 505 STI brake piston question

Again, and still, working on a front brake job (84 505 STI sedan) and am a bit uncertain as to how to position (and why one has to) the piston in the cylinder bore. On either front piston, just where the piston touches the brake pad, there is a machine recessed groove that I have no idea how is should be positioned. These are Ate, ask Teves, brakes.

From the diagram that I have in my book (that appears to be of the passenger's side) they show the groove positioned a certain way. Might someone out there know how to position the grooves on both sides and explain why the pistons are manufactured as they are? Thanks,
Ken
