If they're anything like the ATE rear calipers that are oh so common
on many European cars from the early 80s, you do need to orient the
pistons just right. The Robert Bentley manual (for the Volvo 240
where Girling or ATE calipers were used in the rear) has this to say:
Step 12: On ATE calipers, check piston position. To avoid brake
squeal, the piston should be oriented so that the chamfers on each
piston form a 20 degree angle with the lower surface of the caliper.
Figures 9 and 10 show the Volvo special tools used to check and adjust
the angle.
I'll see if I can dig up a picture of what is meant later today.
