Ah, these old cars..
My speedo cable took a dump. and I read in the archives that one can isolate it to the
upper or lower cable by disconnecting at the cruise pickup (BA10 BTW). I'm able to turn
the lower cable round and round with no resistance, so I will pull the cable to check to be
sure.
Anyway, despite my carefulness with my gorilla arms around the adjoining wires in the
tight space, I somehow managed to break loose one of the wires on the ignition resistor
pack. The result was a horrific engine miss, as I had lost a cylinder. Putting my hand over
the tailpipe while it was running confirmed a major problem.
I have seen three resistor packs (made by Bosch) in my history of the N9TE, and all have
had frayed wiring right where the wires come out. There is no insulation there. The wire
gets thinner as strands break off, so the resistance goes up. Hmm, maybe that is going to
affect things..
So I cleaned up the terminals, and reattached all the wires securely. The engine idles
much better, and it also runs better.
It's one of the rare weak links to be aware of with the turbo engine. The car will still run
with the problem of thin wires, but it's nice to do things which get everything up to snuff
in order to maximize the way the car is supposed to run.
