I think it is an excellent habit to keep a key hidden on the outside

So, friend of mine is driving home in his 91 Jetta TD. Light turns   yellow, could go through, but ambulance with lights on approaching,   better to stop. Push pedal down, total brake failure! Only choice   is to floor the accel, just missing the ambulance.

So, he gets towed to the nearest garage, $50. Bit of a crime ridden   area, take the stereo out, put it in the trunk. All this time the   girlfriend won't shut up about how they could have been killed, btw.

It's dark now, and after putting more stuff from the car into the   trunk, the trunk won't close. Angrily he gives it one good slam,   then another, still won't close, what the heck? The stereo had   decided to fall in between the lock and the latch, and was now   smashed to bits. $750.

Now so mad he's shaking, he walks around to the front and slams the   car door in disgust. The cab he called pulls up just then, and he   realises he doesn't have his wallet.

Yep, it was sitting on the front seat of the locked Jetta, along   with his car keys.
