Another thing to check is the throttle position switch. I've seen it goes bad number of times. When it's bad, idle will be erratic, often high and rpm is slow to return to idle after releasing the gas padal. And make sure the switch is adjusted correctly so that when the throttle is closed, you heard the click sound from the switch. It tells the ECU to be in the idling mode.

The Mi16s seem to have trouble keeping intake gaskets
I am about to change another pair.
Make sure that the support arms at each outer end of the manifold are there.
Listen for air leaking between the manifold and the head.
You should clean/flush out the idle speed control motor with carb cleaner
and lube with WD40

Subject: [Peugeot-L] '91 Mi16 - question about "returning to idle"
Hey gang,
Well, my "new" '91 Mi16 is back in my possession, and
after it gets a few more front suspension upgrades
(bushings and ball joints, of course...already did
shocks and shock mounts) and a new muffler (its very
loud), she's pretty much as good as she can get.
Three things: What is the idle speed these cars
should run at? My 49 state '89 runs a little under
- This CA '91 car seems to be running between
1000-1200, which is too high, correct?
Secondly, I'm finding that when I shift, the engine
seems to "hang on" to its revs and not return to idle
as quickly as my '89. I've noticed the accelerator is
On much firmer, so I have two thoughts...one, a sticky
accelerator cable, or an idle control valve issue?
Third, the bouncy speedo...time for a new cable?
Any help would be appreciated!
Best,
Paul Hughes
