Sounds like there was a power surge and the bulb burned out. It has to light up when the ignition is on, engine not running, in order to give the signal to the alternator to start charging once the engine started.

Subject: [Peugeot-L] 505 '91 N9TEA Alternator Light Question
Hello,
Last week the light came on. I drove the car with the light on for five miles (40-45 mph), suddenly the light became fainter. I took off from a stop sign, the light became faint, then bright, then went out.
The person changing the alternator put a testing device on the battery which said alternator not charging.
I know the alternator was not charging when the light was on, but does anyone have any ideas why the light would go out? Is that an LED?
Thank you.
Bill
