Chris,
I can appreciate your joy in finding a rust-free
504. Congratulations -- I am sure the conversion will be worth the trouble.
There are a few differences between 78 and 79 models though.
The 78 seats won't go into the 79 without a fight -- the 79 has 505
style straight tracks, where the 78 seats have curved side tracks and
a front pivot.
The 78 uses 9 volt 60-second glowplugs; the 79 uses 11volt 20-second
ones. If your head is original, with the 18mm plugs, you are stuck
with them, and would have to cycle your plugs two or three times if
you use the 79 controller. Using the 79 controller would shorten the
life of the plugs because of the higher voltage. The 78 controller
circuit is wired differently from the 79 and the connections to the
box are altogether different. If your head has been replaced and has
the 12mm glowplugs, all is cool.
The 79 floorpan was redesigned to accommodate both automatic and
standard transmissions, where there were two different floorpans in
78. It is possible that there will be some mismatch between the
console and the floorpan.
Those are the only problems I can think of.
Good luck!!
