Ok gang this is what it is all about, thanks. I just spoke with my wife and she suggests we test the mpg again. We think, but need to test this, that we put 6 gallons per week, she drives at least 25 miles 6 days per week. We will keep track, but I think that the last time we checked it was 20 MPG. If this is true then our Peugeot can be made to get better fuel mileage? I have adjusted the valves, I could do it again. I remember in the old days when I was a VDub Mechanic we would adjust the valves all the time. But air cooled VW engines were notorious for loose heads, so we had to stay on top of the adjustment. No, I haven't tested compression. It is on my list that as soon as we get a little bit ahead, I will buy a compression gauge for diesels.

The engine smoked like a train when we bought it for $200.00. We were told that it needed a head gasket. I torqued the head and adjusted the valves and then bypassed the radiator temperature sensor which turns on the fans. This seems to have worked so well I haven't bought a new temp switch, but I gather temperature in a diesel is crucial so maybe this should be done ASAP. The issue with the head gasket leak also seems to have resolved itself. No, you don't hear about engines fixing themselves often, but the torquing on the head must have helped. The problem with this engine, which made the car lot mechanic say it needed a new head gasket was air in the coolant. It was slightly pressurizing the coolant hoses, so much so, I believe the previous owner bypassed the heater core because the valve couldn't handle the pressure.

We lost the alternator fan belt on Monday. Yeah, lost it, but my wife used very good judgement and turned around on her way to work and came home when she saw the Batt light come on. The bottom line? After installing the new belt I warmed the engine up and found the coolant return line to the radiator was not pressurized. Hmmm, fixed itself, see?

Anyway, now with this new information about you guys getting very good MPG in the diesel XN2 engines. I will get back into the engine and see what I can do to improve our mileage. The 505, is an awesome car, we got it in trade for computer work and to try our homemade fuel. Now my wife has taken over the Peugeot as its full time driver, I need a 4x4 for my new business venture. I am doing wireless Internet in our mountainous area of New Mexico. I am learning about diesel engines and loving it, by the way. You can see my progress at www.4x4wire.com<http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB74&Number=911980&fpart=&PHPSESSID=>
