Fellow Peugeotphiles:
A couple of weeks ago someone backed into the front end of my 1987 505 liberte sedan which was stopped at a redlight (go figure..), causing damage to the grille, hood, fog lights, bumper cover, possibly headlight adjusters and condenser fan.
The car has 90K miles and other than needing a front wheel bearing, has practically no real issues. It was my daily driver until the crash.
It will cost close to 2500 to get the car repaired, even by the estimate of Allstate's own adjuster who inspected and photographed the vehicle. But Allstate is claiming that the vehicle is "totalled", and that since the vehicle's market value is only 1300, that is how much they will give me. They will let me keep the car.
Now, the issue I am faced with is that I really want to repair this car because of the sweet condition it is in, inside and out. The xn6 engine mated with the 4-speed auto transmission is something I have long wanted to own.. economical, reliable, durable... The interior looks and feels next to new (barring some surface spots on the headliner); the tires, exhaust, brakes, are recent; and I put in about 600 bucks on repairs as soon as I bought it to take care of an assortment of smaller things (clutch fan repair, door stop replacement, AC check and recharge etc).
But 1300 gets me only about 2/3 the way to getting this car back to its pre-collision condition. I made this point to the insurance adjuster and he was open to receiving additional evidence and testimonials about the real value of a peugeot in this condition. This is where some of you can help out.
Please contact me off list if you or anyone else you know can provide any sort of documentation/testimonial that a 1987 Peugeot 505 in this kind of shape is worth at least 2K and possibly 2500. That way I won't have to pay out of pocket to remedy damages to my car caused by someone else's negligence.
I will give you a fax number provided by the adjuster and you can forward it to him so that before the final settlement is made, he has relevant information besides that supplied by his own sources on the "market value" of this rare vehicle.
Appreciate it,
Anup
