I would make sure that the cable is completely pushed into the gearbox. Since pulling the cable allows you to engage in reverse, a broken cable means no reverse at all. So looks like the cable is stuck in pull position.

Subject: [Peugeot-L] 405 DL BE1/5 reverse selector cable
I topped up my somewhat leaky 45 gearbox with 0.3 L of 80W90
synthetic today and also cleaned off the gunk so I can trace the
leak.....I think it's coming from the LH driveshaft seal.
Anyway....So that is done, and then I back the car out of the
driveway into our street....but selecting reverse doesn't require
the pull-up collar on the gearshift to be used, the car just slips
into reverse. I should add that all I did was top up the oil and
clean off the grease from the bottom of the transaxle case, not mess
around with the reverse selector cable.
So now it's like the cable is always engaged and selecting first
gear is tricky. In all other respects the gear selection is normal.
Is the cable broken, or am I missing something here? And why would
it happen on the day I choose to top up the oil level?
Thanks
Mike Tippett
