I am using the power steering rack from a 505 in my 504 coupe. I made
the change to have quicker steering (3.4 turns instead of 4.5). I am not
using the pump so it is basically unassisted and as not as heavy as one
would expect. All P/S equipment has been removed from the rack. Do you
still have concerns that it could be damaged? I thought that in the
configuration I am using it just becomes the same as an unassisted rack.

True of most steering racks. The Peugeot rack though is a standard
steering
rack assisted with an external cylinder and a spool valve in the pinion.
Unless dirt gets in it, there is not much to damage by using it without
the
pump.
