After going back and forth for too long I finally finished my front
brakes (84 505 STI, sedan) and, in doing so, consulted with people, the
list and manuals. One member was nice enough to scan me a page from
the Haynes book that turned out to be the same diagram that it was in
my Peugeot manual. There was also a different diagram that came with
the Ate brand pads that I bought for the job. The figure depicted in
the Peugeot and scanned manual appears to be of the passenger's side.
The Ate diagram's diagram is, it appears, to be of the driver's side.
The scan and my manual, show a view of the top of the piston, as if you
can see through the rotor and the pads. The diagram appears to be the
passenger's side and an arrow shows the direction of rotation of the
disc going clock-wise, as if the car was moving forward and you were
looking at it from the passenger side.
The Ate diagram is the same essential diagram except that it is (I
believe) of the driver's side. The diagram indicates that it is a
front caliper and since the rotation direction arrow is headed
counter-clockwise it, I think, has to be the driver's side
In the Peugeot manual the diagram shows the piston set in the bore with
one end of the cut-away set directly in the center of the horizontally
mounted cylinder, or at 9 o'clock if you are facing it. The other end
(the other end of the cut-away channel) is at 1:30 or so. It seemed,
at the time, crazy to forage for a gauge when the diagram shows one end
right on the cylinder's center axis.
In contrast, the Ate literature shows the driver's side, but the part
where the cut-away touches the bore is a fraction lower then 3 o'clock
(9 o'clock on the passenger's side).
I ended up using the 3 and 9 o'clock method which, at least, appears to
follow the manual and the diagram that Haynes uses. For those of you
who were into this (I appreciate the feedback) I am attaching the post
with the diagram of, what I believe is the front passenger side caliper
cut in half/
