I own 2 Peugeot 504 s originally driven by Petrol fuel and now has been
converted into Diesel. Rather than putting a Peugeot engine I've put a
Japanese diesel engine knowing they're
economical.. (in sri lanka japanese spare parts widely available and
inexpensive.)
3 differences were made except for the few wiring changes
- insert a metal plate inbetween japanese bellhousing and Peugeot BA7/4
gear box this plate is nearly 1" thick
- poke an additional hole in the fuel tank and made a return line from the
injector pump
- made new engine mounting points on the chassis..
apart from that i had to swap the battery position from left to right.. and
few wiring changes as diesel engine's alternator / dynamo operates in
different volt .. i think its powerfull than the one in petrol engine. again
installed a new timer relay switch for idle heat or the glow plugs..
i've attached a diagram....... forgot to mention that i had to increase the
length of top shaft in order to capture the gap of the metal plate of 1"
thickness..

Subject: Re: [Peugeot-L] putting a Diesel engine in a gas 505 can it be
done?
I'm only posting so that someone with more knowledge will chime in here and
correct me ;)
Just from my recollection of previous questions of this nature, I don't
think the auto gas tranny will mount to the diesel engine. Maybe you just
need a different bellhousing, not sure on that. As for the gas tank, on the
diesel, it's behind the seat and though I have never owned a gas peugeot, I
think the tank is in the more traditional local under the car. Not sure how
you swap out the diesel tank (is there enough space behind seat in gas
model?) or that it even would need to be done. You could probably just tap
and install a return line fitting of some sort on the gas model.
I'd actually like to know how easy this type of swap would be as well.
Specifically, how is the added weight of diesel engine handled? does diesel
engine have same engine mounting points?
etc, etc.
