Steve, unfortunately I was not with Peugeot anymore
when these cars came out; so I never got to work on
them. If it had the kind of switch that Eduardo was
describing (an inertia switch), then you just push it
back down. But your car may not use that method as it
may be newer or different than in another country.
Most cars today use either an ignition signal or
sometimes an alternator output to determine if the
engine is still running in order to turn off the fuel
pumps to prevent a fire in the case of an accident,
which is the whole purpose for these cut-off systems.
The reason they phased out the inertia switch method
was because they could be "popped" by bad bumps and
such; but your car could have one, but placed
somewhere
else such as in the trunk behind the side panels. Your
owner's manual should mention it if it has one. I
don't
think it does because they're mechanical spring loaded
devices that I've never known to be able to reset
themselves. The thing to do would be to determine if
you're getting an injector pulse or if you can hear
them working next time it dies; and if it does, then
check for fuel pressure as it could be a weak punp or
partially clogged filter that's causing vapor lock.
If you're not getting a signal, then you need to check
the things that would prevent the PCM(ECU) from firing
them. A main culprit is the TDC sensor; however, it's
only needed for starting, so if it kills while you're
driving, that's not the problem. Besides bad wiring,
one of the main culprits in car electrical systems are
relays, and the PCM is usually powered by a "main
relay". Find out where that is, look at the diagram on
the side and make an appropriate jumper wire with
crimp
on spade connectors(probably two wires going into one,
the one side plugging into where no.30 goes, and the
other two going to where the two 87s go);and plug that
into the connector in place of the relay. If it now
runs, I would suspect the relay. The other guy's post,
I think it was Steve, had some good ideas that I would
look into also. Whatever, don't get discouraged or
feel
bad as it's probably nothing major and intermittence
gives the best professional mechanics plenty of
trouble. Good luck and let us know what happens.
