I found the wood grained 404's on ebay rather conflicting. On the one hand, they looked well cared for, and a great deal of work had gone into the 'distinctive' appearance touches. I have to applaud the care. On the other hand, as an admirer of the basic pinnafarina design of the 404, I found the work subtractive and not additive. There are very few who can take a fine design car and make his/her version a better evocation. Perhaps M. Chapron and his efforts with the Citroen D series would qualify.

I found my footing with Peugeot in 404s and regardless of the wood, it is still a happy thing to see nice ones in the marketplace.
