It's a common thing in MB engines. You need a pin extractor tool to do it right. When I
replaced the head gasket on my 2.5 turbo I didn't have the tool and tried to use a bolt
with the correct thread and a puller - no luck. Those things are just held in place by
friction but they are in there good! I was lucky that an old-school MB mechanic was kind
enough to lend me his personal tool. This guy heard me trying to explain what I needed to
the parts counter guy (I was going to buy the $145 CDN tool) and offered his well used
tool to for the weekend - no deposit! So, I was able to remove the upper pin with the
tool (easy), but the lower one took some creativity (and lots of swearing). Have a look
at:

Do yourself a favour - either get the tool (rent/buy), or put it all back together and
back out of the job because even with the tool you're not guaranteed a smooth time of it.

Subject: [Peugeot-L] off topic: Mercedes 190 E, 2.3
Somehow I have gotten involved in doing a head gasket on a 1994
Mercedes 190 E 2.3 liter sedan. At the top of the head, in the front
of the engine, just under the thermostat housing, there appears to be a
small bolt (or something) with internal threads that secures the upper
timing chain slide (channel?). One, it looks like, has to remove this
pin to pull the cam and the timing chain.
Does anyone know what I am asking about and, if you can explain how to
pull the bolt, are there any other potential pitfalls that I should be
concerned about on this job? Is there, for example, a trick to setting
and marking the cam sprocket and timing chain before removing it?
Thanks,
Ken
