        Assuming that the head you bought is the right one (XN6?) and you put it on well enough and that it was running when you took it apart, it might be that you have the distributor in incorrectly. If I am not mistaking, backfiring is a common result of improperly timed motors.

        I would make sure that you know where #1 fires and have the distributor in properly with the rotor pointing where it should. Also, check the plug wires to make sure they are hooked up to the correct cylinders.

        I don't know how to static time the XN6, but you should be able to get it reasonably close and then work the starter remotely while, with your other hand, you are able rotate the distributor, advancing or retarding the spark, until you get it started and can time it with a light. Ken
